I don't think you need a KDE extension. As I recall there are programs that will let you run programs in the root window (background) like xsnow and fishtank screen savers.

From here:

If you just want something that's animated, you can try xearth and xsnow. I use xsnow, and I think it actually makes it easier to concentrate on a window in the foreground. It's very nice when you have a good winter wallpaper too.

Other ideas are xfishtank, xine/mplayer using the root window, and pretty much any of the video hacks used by xscreensaver.

Xine in the root window: --root option

Mplayer in the root window: -rootwin option ("Works only with x11, xv, xmga and xvidix drivers.")

Windows had that all the way back to win 95. It was called active desktop. I assume xp does it too. Never tried or cared to have it on Linux. It was quite a resource hog on win 95.

My point was you could get the same effect by creating a very small/short movie that is looped. The movie is simply the animated image you're interested in, then play that movie in an infinite loop on the root window. All the flash of Active Desktop without all the resource hogginess and scripting vulnerabilities! Smile

I've tried them once.

Animated wallpapers will make you sick.

Try reading with a bunch of stuff moving around...!

Yes you could do this with active desktop on all previous OSs. Dreamscape, I imagine makes it easier to do this. A buddy of mind tried dreamscape and he said it was a resource hog like all the previous versions. What Brion is talking about should work perfectly for you. I saw a demo of a guy makes a movie his background around the time XGL came out.

How would I set it where I can use xscreensaver as my background? I think I would enjoy being able to do that.

Here's a good resource: XScreenSaver FAQ

However, realize that xscreensaver does not render anything to the root window itself - it runs a specified program (such as glslideshow) at the point where the screensaver is set to kick in. That program must be able to write to the root window (and glslideshow can, as can mplayer and xine) - so you need to select a screensaver that runs in the root window and set it to do so. Then your screen saver will kick in to your root window.

Be aware however, since it's still a screensaver, as soon as you move or click your mouse you will exit the screensaver (or be prompted to unlock your screen), so xscreensaver is probably not the program you want to run in your root. Just run the program you want to see (assuming you want it running while you do work and stuff).

I should correct myself a bit from my above post. xsnow and fishtank are not screen savers -- they are programs that can be used as screen savers if you wish, though I've never seen anyone use xsnow as a screen saver (since its purpose is to collect snow on top of windows as it falls).

Alright, I was able to disable the nautilus desktop.

Now I just need to run the screensaver instead of the desktop.

I have my terminal in the directory for the screensavers, and now I just need to know what to type to run the screensaver file. I have not been able to find a run command anywhere I look Sad

So far this is what I have...

(insert run command here) (screensaver of my choice) -root(to run on the desktop)

Any help with the run command I need would be greatly appreciated.

run e17 Wink they have quite a range of animated wallpapers from the not so hungry to the obscenely ravenous as far as resources go (certainly chewed up a dual pIII-1gHz + 2G RAM + GeForce3-500ti

the tech is all based on their EFL so XGL, root window, etc is not required - download the animated wallpapers from www.get-e.org, select and behold (you can also put a different one on each workspace)

only snag is whether you can get the latest version of e17 to build on your distro or not - even if there's a .deb or similar, it's most likely just a script to pull from svn and compile; that said I have read recently that the codebase is starting to settle somewhat

edit here's one I made earlier
