Yes, this is yet another Linux distribution. What's different here is that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite fully featured. Puppy boots into a 48M ramdisk, and that's it, the whole caboodle runs in RAM. Unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, Puppy in his entirety loads into RAM. This means that all applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input instantly. . . .

1. What does Puppy boot off?

Anything! My "first take" with installing Puppy was on a tiny USB flash card, as I really like the idea of having all my personal data and the operating system in something that I can carry in a shirt pocket or wallet.

2. How small is Puppy?

Puppy occupies about 35M on my CF card, CDROM, or whatever is the storage media. With regard to flash-Puppy, Compact Flash cards are supplied pre-formatted in MSDOS format, and I haven't changed that. To setup, it's just a matter of copying three files to the CF card, and this you can do from inside Windows, DOS, or any Linux. Then, you execute a small program, and there's one for DOS/Windows and one for Linux, to install the correct boot-up code onto the card.

3. What applications come with Puppy?

Up to and including version 0.6, all applications in Puppy were written in C (not C++) and used only the Athena/neXtaw or GTK+ v1.2 widget libraries. From version 0.7 onwards I relaxed this restriction and allowed C++ applications, and also the Qt library v2.3 (for Konqueror and Scribus).

You really think it's in the thousands? Shocked

July 16, 2003 at CA World in Las Vegas Linus Torvalds said he believed there were approximately 130 distros.

Here is support for mr_ed's data:
hhttp://www.distrowatch.com/stats.php wrote:
Despite its appearance, DistroWatch is hardly an exhaustive list of Linux distributions. Due to lack of time and other priorities, the following categories are presently excluded from these pages:
- floppy-based distribution,
- embedded distributions (e.g. Midori Linux),
- distributions running from Windows partitions (e.g. Phat Linux, Topologi Linux).

Currently, there are a total of 222 Linux distributions in the database. Of these distributions, 26 have been officially discontinued, or the distribution's web site (or product information) simply disappeared, or became inactive (i.e haven't released a new version in over 2 years and their web sites don't give indication of work in progress). These are: Beehive, Blue Point, BYO, Caldera/SCO, Corel, Dynasoft, Eridani, Happy, HP Secure, JBLinux, Kondara, LASER5, LinuxInstall.org, LinuxPPC, Luminux, Madeinlinux, Merdeka, Neat, Progeny, Red Office, Spectra, Stampede, Storm, SuperRescue, Ututo and Virtual). These distributions will not be included in the statistics that follow. That gives us a total of 196 Linux distributions for which facts and figures have been compiled.
