Mondo is reliable. It backs up your GNU/Linux server or workstation to tape, CD-R, CD-RW, NFS or hard disk partition. In the event of catastrophic data loss, you will be able to restore all of your data [or as much as you want], from bare metal if necessary. Mondo is in use by Nortel Networks, Siemens, HP (US and France), IBM, NASA's JPL, dozens of smaller companies, and tens of thousands of users.
Mondo is comprehensive. Mondo supports LVM, RAID, ext2, ext3, JFS, XFS, ReiserFS, VFAT, and can support additional filesystems easily: just e-mail the mailing list with your request. It supports adjustments in disk geometry, including migration from non-RAID to RAID. Mondo runs on all major Linux distributions and is getting better all the time. You may even use it to backup non-Linux partitions, such as NTFS.
Mondo is free! It has been published under the GPL (GNU Public License), partly to expose it to thousands of potential beta-testers but mostly as a contribution to the Linux community. I charge for 1-to-1 technical support to fund Mondo's development. |

On a related note:
Amanda
| Quote: | WHAT IS AMANDA
Amanda, the Advanced Maryland Automatic Network Disk Archiver, is a backup system that allows the administrator of a LAN to set up a single master backup server to back up multiple hosts to a single large capacity tape drive. Amanda uses native dump and/or GNU tar facilities and can back up a large number of workstations running multiple versions of Unix. Recent versions can also use SAMBA to back up Microsoft Windows hosts. |
Currently supports only tape as archive media.

I tried mondo rescue when I was running mdk 8.2 and it said my system was not sane, so it would not create the disk.
I mostly use partimage now. It's fast and easy. However, it does not support writing the image directly to removeable media. You can split the image for later saving to CDR/DVDR.

I feel so old fashioned, I just use MT and tar for my tape drive.
Now I've got an X server up and running on the boss's 2k box though, I could probably use a graphical tool.

| Mondo is also offering an installer CD, and is ported to FreeBSD.
